Research Paper Guidelines
Write a research paper on one of the topics given at the end of these guidelines. Alternatively,
you can select your own topic but it must get my approval.
The report should be no less than 7
pages long, not including the cover page and reference information, double spaced and using font size 12.
The paper will assess the following:
1.
Your ability to understand and address the scope and objectives of a manageable research
topic
2.
Your ability to identify credible and relevant
sources
3.
Your use of information effectively to accomplish specific purpose
4.
Your ability to present information in a clear and meaningful way
5.
Your ability to incorporate your thoughts and personal comments.
6.
Your ability to analyze and present researched information
7.
Whether you cite sources in an appropriate style. You must use in-text citations.
8.
Your ability to incorporate
ideas of others in an ethical manner; summarizing,
paraphrasing and quoting are correct and appropriate
All sources must be properly cited in the
,
American Psychological Association
, APA,
the Council of
Science Editors scientific style, CSE, or some other accepted format.
Whichever the format, the
following must be included;
ï‚·
the authors listed on the publication (or on the chapter if citing a book)
ï‚·
the title of the paper (or chapter if citing a book),
ï‚·
the name of the journal (or book)
ï‚·
editors if a book is cited
ï‚·
volume number
ï‚·
complete pagination (first and last page of the work cited)
ï‚·
year of publication
Here is a site with examples of different ways to cite sources using the APA format.
http://www.library.cornell.edu/resrch/citmanage/apa
Important sources such as scientific journals, medical text books, encyclopedias or other reliable sources
must be used in preparation of the paper. The text book should not be used as a source of information.
There must be a minimum of six (8) references including five (5) primary and two (3) secondary sources.
The text book can be included as one secondary source. Do not use internet websites unless they are from
reputable government or scientific sites.
Here is a link describing primary and secondary sources,
http://guides.library.ualberta.ca/microbiology343
Clearly indicate which of your references are primary
and which ones are secondary.
Reliable web sites such as CDC, NIH, or other medically related sites or peer reviewed sites must be cited
correctly. Here is an example of how to cite a site;

This is a ‘scenario problem’. Read the information and answer the questions. Your answers must be concise, focus on the question (an introduction isn’t needed), and include a short explanation. ANSWERS OF ESSAY LENGTH ARE NOT REQUIRED. You will need to include some explanation as part of your answers. References should be included both in text (Harvard referencing system) and as a reference list at the end. An exemplar based on last year’s scenario is available on Moodle to guide you on the level of detail expected for this assessment.
Please note that these questions are not equally weighted, and it is likely that answers to some will be a bit longer than others. Because of this, your mark will be based on your overall response to all of the questions. This doesn’t mean you can ignore a question – you must attempt all questions.
