TikTok has the ability to feed risks which can easily lead younger users down a rabbit hole of depressive and harmful content. 2. Teaching teens about social media literacy, they are able to maximize their chances of having balanced, safe, and meaningful experiences on plat- forms like TikTok. It also important because it allows them to develop the ability to critically evaluate the credibility and relevance of online content, individuals may be better equipped to navigate an online space that is rife with misinformation, disin- formation, violence, and oppressive content. 3. The contribution of social media literacy is signifi- cant since it considers aspects of such platforms, because when sharing information, it prioritizes the expectation of positive feedback from other users, or that the content supports one's personal beliefs and values. Social media literacy is oriented to- wards the prevention of risks such as mental and physical health problems, as well as other types of consequences that can arise from interactions between people, for example cyberbullying, infor- mation spreading, and other difficulties. 4. To held aid this problem it’s essential to guide and educate teenagers about the potential consequences that comes with social media and teach them about the importance of social media literacy to avoid the depressive and anxiety filled down spiral that they might face. 2. In the debate video, “Is Social Media Bad for Kids’ Mental Health?,” Jim Steyer states that, “There's a wealth of research that shows that social me- dia is, first and foremost, addictive. It's been intentionally designed for maximum user engagement. An arms race for your attention, for your kids' attention. And it capitalizes upon the most vulnerable and underdeveloped brains. It's essentially a no brainer. 45% of teens say-- girls say they're ad- dicted to TikTok, just for one example.”

Reyes stated in the article, “Impacts of Social Media on Mental Health” that, “On the other hand, sev- eral studies have pointed out the potentially detrimental effects of social media use on mental health. Concerns have been raised that social media may lead to body image dissatisfaction, increase the risk of addiction and cyberbullying involvement, contribute to negative behaviors, and nega- tively affects mood. Excessive use has increased loneliness, fear of miss- ing out, and decreased subjective well-being and life satisfaction. Users at risk of social media addiction often report depressive symptoms and lower self-esteem .” 1. 24% of teenagers say social media has a mostly negative effect on their life. 2. 70% of teenagers check social media several times a day. 3. 32% of teenagers report being cyber-bullied. 4. 70% of teenagers believe that social media platforms do not do enough to prevent cyberbullying. 5. 42% of people on social media report feeling more insecure about their appearance after using it. 2. In February 2024, the writer Dylan, from the Vujuday Creative Digital Agency, stated in his article, “How Does Social Media Affect School Per- formance?,” that, “Students may become so hooked on scrolling through posts and chatting online that they lose track of time. This habit can hurt their mental health and negatively impact their focus and study habits. Constant distractions from social media are a major reason for lower grades and reduced academic achievement. 1. The TikTok algorithm is excellent at personalizing the content they show making it hard for students to put their phone down espe- cially when it’s time to focus. 2. Research shows that it’s easy for students to waste time on TikTok, which puts their schoolwork on the back burner 3. As the videos on TikTok range between a couple of seconds and 10 minutes long, students get accustomed to paying attention for shorter periods of time and the feeling of reward that comes from this. However, students are expected to sustain their attention for much longer to secure their knowledge during lessons and inde- pendent study. 3. Teaching teens about social media literacy. 1. Setting up lesson plans or conversations with your child or student to de- velop healthy news habits, fact-check the stories they encounter, and iden- tify trustworthy sources of information. You are also able to invite students and children to consider the ways bias and stereotyping influence both media narratives and how we consume them. 2. Educators or parents should be the ones to teach their teens about social media literacy. Being smart and safe online can empower them to make
informed decisions, protect their privacy, and navigate the digital world responsibly. They should also be the ones to oversee the implementation of teaching their children or students about social media literacy. 3.
