“Sexual Violence and Exploitation/ inequality Within the Mexican Revolution in regard to women” Introduction This paper sheds light on the heinous crimes that were committed against women during the war. Even though most of the crimes committed against women were not captured as well in Mariano Azuela's seminal work The Underdogs, he does give minimal insight on issue of sexual violence and exploitation that women endured during this time. The book makes note that women were the subject of sexual violence by the Federals while the men were portrayed to be out fighting the war. The way that women are made to be seen is significant because helplessness and insignificance was important to the way we remember the large role women played in the Mexican Revolution. This exploration of the topic will show us just how bad women had it during these times and to what extent was the abuse. The methods that I will be using to investigate my research question are literary analysis that give a in depth look at what the roles of the woman and the cons of being a woman during the time of the Mexican Revolution. I will also use historical context examination to determine the type of situation a woman encountered during this time and if other structures such as class, social, economic, political, and religious influenced their exploitation and abuse. The evidence I hope to achieve with the type of research I will be doing is historical background of the suffering that women endured when this war happened and how many children that they conceived where mixed because they were victims of sexual abuse. I also expect to get evidence that shows that women have succeeded and are held to a higher status then when the Mexican Revolution occurred. My hypothesis or thesis statement is that women have always had to work twice as hard for what they want and have never been able to achieve anything because men have taken their voice from them. The importance of my
research is to continue to shed light on the topic of women oppression and how the exploitation and abuse that is endured by one still to this day, is not taken seriously. A question that still is raised and I hope that it puts you to think is why, to this day, do we have such an issue with women being someone in life and going against the stereotypical roles that men have put on them.
