Dr Naismith Basketball

Professional basketball started to develop. As said by Reema “Teams flourished across the country throughout the 1920s. There were thousands of men's professional basketball teams in towns and cities all over the United States. Sometimes Players jumped from team to team and teams played in different cities. Leagues sometimes came and went”(slide 9). Many teams started to develop like the Celtics and the Harlem Globetrotters.

The game much of the world knows today as basketball has been played for years upon years. Ranging from small gym class games to the Olympic Summer games, the game has been played all over the world and has become a major part of some people's lives. It was invented by a great man named James Naismith. He created basketball and gave it the push it needed to become one of the biggest games the world holds dear today. James was Born on November 6, 1861 in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. His parents were John Naismith and Margaret Young. He attended grade school at Bennie's Corner just outside of Almonte in 1867. Basketball has been played all around the world and there are many different rules and regulations when playing this sport. Basketball has many different levels of experience. There is a level at the fifth and sixth grade level, the seventh and eighth grade level, the junior varsity level, the varsity level in high school, the college level, and the professional level or National Basketball Association (NBA). Basketball was invented in 1892 by a Canadian doctor named James Naismith. He started with having simple rules so all the players were able to get used to playing the sport very easily. Basketball has changed over the years and it will continue to change in the future. For all the different levels of basketball, there are different rules and judgments on how the game should be played. Basketball has many different ways to play effectively. It is a very competitive sport and as a player it is his/her job to figure out which is the best way to beat the opponent on both sides of the ball.

A Canadian, James “Doc” Naismith came up with the game of Basketball with the concept of developing a game of finesse that discouraged roughness (Caponi-Tabery 83). Since its creation basketball has become a worldwide sensation. Basketball has seen many changes in its rules and style of play but it continues to be one of the most popular sports in the world today, second only to soccer. Basketball is most popular in its home country the United States where it is played at many levels. There are 30 professional or NBA teams, over 350 teams at the collegiate level, and countless high school and amateur league teams. Basketball is relatively a new sport compared to football or soccer but it is still an important part of American culture. Basketball is not just a sport but is a form of artistic expression and way of life for many people.

Dr. James Naismith was a physical education teacher, who is credited for the invention of basketball in 1891. Originally from Canada, Dr. Naismith was working in Massachusetts at a YMCA training school. He had to come up with a game that would keep students busy on cold winter days. Dr. Naismith used to play a game when he was kid called “Duck on a Rock,” which is the main foundation of his invention, basketball. Starting with nine players on each team and a soccer ball, the first game of basketball was played on December 21, 1891. Initially, only passing the ball up the court was allowed, not dribbling. The goal of the game, like it is today, was to try and shoot the ball into the basket which is attached to a backboard. Whichever team has the most points at the end of the game wins. The sport has developed many rules since the first game.

Colleges also helped popularize basketball. In 1893, in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania the first recorded college basketball game was between Geneva College and the New Brighton YMCA.  Geneva College now feels they are the birthplace of college basketball. 1901 is when many colleges began having basketball seasons. Only few colleges like Yale, Minnesota, Dartmouth, Columbia, Chicago, Utah and Navy participated at first. In the early days of college basketball, most teams played less than 10 games, and some 15 or 16. That following year, the University of Minnesota would become the first undefeated team in basketball, by going 11 and 0. Early games always had problems with injuries. Basketball (or Basket Ball –then two words) was invented by Dr. James Naismith in December 1981. He was an instructor at Christian Workers in Springfield Massachusetts. On March 11, 1892 students and workers at the school played the first public game of basket ball. On March 22, 1983 Smith College in Massachusetts becomes the first women’s school to play basket ball. Men are not allowed to watch the games.

Naismith had invented the game so the YMCA could play it during the winter season. He hung up two peach baskets to use as hoops. In the original game that Naismith invented, bouncing the ball was prohibited. The first game of basketball took place on January 20th, 1892 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The game had 18 players in total with 9 players on each team. Since it wasn’t a popular sport at the time they didn’t have any money to invent the basketball so they just played with a soccer ball. After attempting to play the game for over 30 minutes they ended it. The final score was 1-0. William R. Chase was the first man to ever score in a basketball game. Basketball wasn’t even called basketball until halfway through the game, when one of the players suggested calling it basketball. (Faurschou)

He tried playing lacrosse and soccer but they were too rough so he created basketball in 1891. Ever since then, the popularity of the sport grew. Also, Naismith created the game and rules in “almost and hour,” says (“factmonster.com”). According to (“thepeoplehistory.com”), in the early 1900’s the “spread of basketball” was made by mainly through two ways. First, the YMCA gave the game a way to be recognized “not only nationwide, but worldwide”. The second way was through college sports. College basketball was far more widespread and popular than any early professional leagues. That is not to say, however, that the early professional leagues did not matter. They were simply “poorly organized”. The first pro basketball league, the National Basketball League, formed in 1937. It merged with the Basketball Association of America in 1946 to create the National Basketball Association (NBA), which is the professional basketball league still around

Basketball started with its invention in 1891 and was started by a P.E. teacher at a YMCA. His name was James Naismith. Once basketball had started rolling, it boomed. It was popular just from a small YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. People eventually picked up on basketball and this was enjoyed by many Americans and is used a lot. Basketball was just invented because there were people that wanted a way to stay conditioned during the winter for the upcoming football and lacrosse season. This is something that we enjoy today and is one of the biggest games in America, because of the evolution of rules, the way the game is played, and evolution of new and old leagues.
