Fasting: Body Cleansing or Starving The Purpose of Fasting Fasting is a body cleansing procedure during which food is restricted and only liquids are consumed. Strictly water fasts are the most brutal; herbal teas and juices made from fresh fruits and vegetables are consumed during a more liberal fast. Juice fasting is the preferred method amongst many doctors and European fasting clinics, perhaps because it is less harsh than other treatment plans. Today in the Western Hemisphere, many chronic health problems result from bad eating habits. There are a mix of people who are over-nourished, malnourished, or both. We eat chemically altered, high-fat toxic foods that do not provide a sufficient amount of essential vitamins and …show more content…
Fasting effects not only our physical being, but our mental, emotional, and spiritual self as well. Physicians with a spiritual orientation are more likely to prescribe fasting to their patients because they are also more likely than other doctors to use the fasting method for cleansing. The rationale behind fasting places an emphasis on control over our habits. When we need to recharge, we take a break from life and go on vacation. When our body needs cleansing, fasting is time away from food. Both methods of withdrawal from normal routine help us get back in touch with what our bodies need. (Haas) The process and benefits of fasting Fasting is a multidimensional experience in which total body transformation occurs. There are a wide range of metabolic changes and experiences. The benefits of fasting include heightened spiritual awareness and relaxation of the body, mind, and emotions. Many feel a sense of letting go of pain from the past and developing a positive attitude towards the present. During fasting, the body is able to clean out its system because it is not expending energy towards the digestive organs. The blood and lymph are detoxified. When fasting, the release of toxins from the colon, kidneys, bladder, lungs, sinuses, and skin clears out complications that have arisen from a bad diet and unhealthy lifestyle. (Haas) The lack of calories consumed during fasting has dramatic effects on the body’s systems. Because of the
Our subjects did start out in a similar dehydrated state. Subjects were asked to fast for five hours prior to the lab and they were restricted to drink alcohol or eat fatty foods the night before. The purpose of avoiding food and drink prior to the lab was so that the nutrients in the food and beverages consumed are not absorbed into the blood stream because it could impact factors that are measured in certain tests. Fasting improves the accuracy of those tests (). If each student did not monitor or follow the correct procedure, we would have had multiple errors in our results. The results would not be as accurate as they should be. The drinking groups varied in the amount that they were supposed
* It is thought that the microbes regulate the expression of the gut protein fasting-induced adipocyte protein (FIAF). This protein is an inhibitor of lipoprotein lipase (LPL).

I will be exploring the topic on a recently recognized eating disorder known as “Purging Disorder.” As you would assume by the name, purging disorder is the act of forced vomiting and/or the misuse of laxatives. Purging can be addictive and causes the individual’s brain to feel “lightness” or “emptiness.” This gives off a psychological sense of relief which leads to compulsive and repetitive behaviors, in this case, purging.
When you're in a state of fasting, the body will reach for food to consume. Without that food available, it'll pull from the body's fat stores. This is especially true when you're working out with in a fasting state. Your body won't have food to pull calories from, so it'll look to the fat stores to fuel the body during a workout.

The normal Jewish fast involved abstaining from all food, but not water. The occasional partial fasts required a restricted diet, not total abstinence (Daniel 10:2-3). During an absolute fast ( Esther 4:16, Acts 9:9), which was a rare event, nothing was ingested. Extended absolute fasts, such as those of Moses and Elijah (Deuteronomy 9:9; 1 Kings 19:8), surely must have had divine assistance. Most fasts lasted but a single day, from sunrise to sunset. After the sun went down, it was okay to eat (e.g. Judges 20:26; 1Samuel 14:24). Daniel fasted for one night (Daniel 6:18). Fasts could be longer, of course. Esther fasted three days and nights (Esther 4:16). David fasted seven days when his child was ill (2 Samuel 12:16-18), as did all of Jabesh-Gilead when Saul was buried (1 Chronicles 10:12). The 40-day fasts of Moses, Elijah and Jesus are the longest mentioned in Scripture (Exodus 34:28; 1 Kings 19:8; Matthew 4:2).
Bulimia nervosa is another form of eating disorder. It poses a more serious, potentially life-threatening disorder (Mayo 2016). People with bulimia tend to eat large amounts of food and then vomit to try and get rid of the extra calories in an unhealthy way (Mayo 2016). Bulimia is categorized in two ways which include purging and non-purging. Purging is self-induced vomiting or the misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas after binging (Mayo 2016). Non-purging is where one uses other methods such as dieting, fasting, or excessive exercising in order to prevent weight
When I began doing my water fast (30 days of water only drink) it was horrifying to think about giving up soda pop. It seemed that during this time so many beverages were available to me for free. It was so easy to forget about the fast and get caught up in grabbing those drinks. I would be almost at taking a drink and then realize that wasn’t water that I was about to drink. That first water fast was one that was truly challenging, but was a sacrifice that helped me grow spiritual. I learned to be more conscious of the decisions that I made during this journey. After numerous other 30 day water fast I later found myself not regarding the sacrifice in the same way. The fast was something that I had done successfully several times before
Some people think that effective weight loss program plans consist of fasting. Health experts inform us that going on a diet that involves avoiding meals can be dangerous. To maintain growth, power, and wellness, the body takes a good volume of nutrients every day. If you don't supply your body with nutrients, the muscles start to breakdown and you will lose muscle not fat.
Gluttony is when a person seeks person satisfaction through any activity that is pleasurable or even the ingestion of foods or drinks. I decided to do the first option in this experiment, and I choose to fast for two days from breakfast and my enjoyable habits such as coffee and chocolate. Fasting from breakfast for two days was quite challenging because when I get up in the morning, I am usually starving which makes it hard to wait until noon to eat. Instead of getting up to get breakfast in the morning, I sat down at my desk and read over this spiritual devotion book my grandmother had given me that has designated prayers for specific issues. I looked through the book and picked which prayers to read for each
Changing your body’s regular digestive process so that food bypasses the parts of your body that absorb calories and nutrients.
Homeostasis is an adaptive, behavioral response to nutrient deficiencies, metabolic imbalances, and other threats to the internal milieu in order to maintain certain critical survival variables at optimal levels. Imbalances are prone to occur in a fasting state, moving the body away from homeostasis. Our bodies have adapted to store fat in case we would possibly encounter a harsh winter, periods of famine, and in order to be able to reproduce. There is a standard set point and detection system our bodies aim to keep at all costs. The detection system is responsible in recognizing deviation from the set point and doing anything possible in efforts of getting the body back to a homeostatic state
After the three days, he refuses to be tempted by food, only drinking one cup of water and later, not even wanting to drink that. While his fasting seems extremely damaging (even Wole acknowledges this and fears what damages he is doing to his body) the effects on him are astonishing, as he describes feeling “true weightlessness”, a sensation where his mind is opened, colors are intensified and he hallucinates. It is clear through his experience that fasting is very important to him, and may make him feel more alive or better that when he is not fasting, giving him a superhuman feeling, and may use fasting as a means to escape his reality, such is when he is in prison.
