Terrence Hendrix Professor Phil West English 1301- 468 11 December 2014 I Am Not A Babysitter: A Rhetorical Analysis Teaching is not a lowly job as most people think. Teaching is a profession that is highly, commendable just like banking, nursing and other professions. However, some people often ridicule the teaching profession merely because of its poor pay, poor career prospects, not to mention the perceived monotony of the daily routine writing lesson plans and preparing lecture materials. Despite all these criticisms, not many teachers have defended themselves. However, in the article “I am not a babysitter,” Heather Robinson takes a stand to defend the teaching profession effectively by appealing to ethos, pathos and logos. This …show more content…
Thus began my career in education.” She also lightly complained about minimum wage, uninvolved parents, and on the poor benefit structures but then states that they are also important issues faced by teachers. The last and most notable rhetoric element in this article is logos, which refers to the logical appeal of the argument. In this article, Robinson’s strength lies in her ability to make logical appeal to the readers. Robinson used causes and consequences, analogy, testimony and syllogism to appeal to logics. In causes and consequences, Robinson reflected on how and why she decided to become a teacher. She stated that she never wanted to be a teacher. She started as a social worker in youth services. However, because she wanted to contribute to youth development, she decided to join the teaching profession to assist youth before they become a statistic. Additionally, she argues that teachers make all professions and because of the important role that teachers play in the life of future generations, she wanted to contribute to a better tomorrow. She states, “How can we not give all of ourselves, our intellect and our talents to this work? After all, it is our current students whom we will be voting for in a future presidential election, who will care for us when we're ill and who will educate our grandchildren.” In analogy, Robinson compared teachers and other professions. She pointed that if
The use of logos, the appeal to logic, is also employed in Susan B. Anthony’s essay (Phillips 250). As mentioned previously, Anthony used other sources, such as the Federal Constitution and the dictionaries of Webster, Worcester, and Bouvier within her speech (513). Quoting these sources added a necessary foundation of information to sustain her argument as knowledgeable. These sources provide her speech with the necessary facts to appeal to the logical, not just the ethical and the emotional.
The authors capture the attention of the reader through an amalgamate of rhetorical patterns based on logos, ethos and pathos. Through reading these articles it is found that the writers predominantly use logos and pathos to put emphasis on their arguments. Specifically, logos is utilized to appeal to reason by repeatedly using data to uphold the arguments claims, while pathos appeals to the audience’s aptitude for compassion.
Through logos a writer appeals to the logical aspects of his or her argument that includes common sense,
When child go through transitions they need people they have built up positive relationships with to help support them through the changes in their lives. We use circle time to explain to the children what is going to happen and they can talk about their feelings children will make a better transition if they know what is going on. We take are cues from the children on how much information is given and how much an explanation is required. We allow time for the information to be processed some children might have delayed reaction and might want to talk later at a quieter time. We are always to be truthful in all our answers so we keep their trust. We listen and acknowledge how the children are feeling and we reassure the children that what they are feeling is normal and other children have been
Some negative parts about being a teacher is seeing the children you have bonded with move on in their growth in development. Being a teacher, you will see many kids come and go and she explains it as seeing your own kids move on in life and not being in their life the remainder of their development.
To explain a situation or argument successfully, one must understand and be able to use rhetoric and its devices. One prime example of the use of rhetorical appeals is in “Letter from Birmingham Jail” by Martin Luther King Jr. In this letter, King simply responds to certain criticisms and explains his presence in Birmingham. He does this effectively by building a historical ethos, appealing to heart-wrenching pathos, and using undeniable logos; which will all be discussed in this essay.
In the newspaper article by author: Sara Drumm, “Protests outside School Board”. There is debate surrounding the issues teachers face throughout every school. Many Americans fail to realize that teaching is no easy task and that it takes full dedication as well as unique skills to teach, while masterfully controlling and executing a classroom.
Throughout the article, Bogard uses logos, pathos, and ethos to persuade the reader of his argument. This includes employing vivid language, facts, logical reasoning, emotional appeals, and anecdotes. We will begin by analyzing how Bogard uses logos to convey his point.
Under social norms, the stigma behind teachers’ is their philosophy of teaching revolves strict social contracts within the classroom to reign control and achieve student success. In Educating Esme: Diary of a Teacher’s First Year by Esme Raji Codell, Esme provides a scope into what thoughts rumble within a teacher’s first-year experience and how there is always a way around to challenge conformity. She accredits her mentor, Ismene as her aspiration for pursuing the education profession and to firmly stand by her beliefs. She echoes Ismene’s words as “she urged me to forgive myself at the end of each day; that no single thing I could say would break a child … or make a child. Still, she taught me not to be too flippant, that, as a doctor cures
Usually during my free time, I just decide to offer myself to take care of my sister’s children because they mean the world to me. Babysitting my niece and nephew gives me the chance to bond more with them. I feel that in being of aunt is very important to build up a close relationship with my niece and nephew. I don’t consider babysitting becoming just a skill. It’s a great way to become a part of a little person’s life. Kids always tend to grow up so fast, so that is why I take advantage to spend as much time that I can with my niece and nephew. I find that every cherishing moment is precious.
Babysitting is always a relaxed and simple way to earn money. Well, it is only simply if you don’t have to watch trouble making children. If the kid is a sweet, obedient angel, then the job is the easiest thing in the world. However, if the child is a rotten, little demon, then good luck. I have babysat several different kinds of kids, but the worst one was quite an adventure.
Kids are great. Playing with them can be very entertaining. Being able to supervise them is another thing though. Am I allowed to take supervision over young children?
All parents require a few good sitters, and this is probably why there are babysitters needed everywhere. Whether it's a consistent weekly agreement at work or just a weekend date with your spouse, everyone requires a few dependable and trustworthy individuals who can be trusted with their kids.
Nanny services is a merit good, a socially desirable but often under-provided good. In a free perfect competition market structure of nanny services, market failure, the inability to recognise allocative efficiency, arise as a positive externality of consumption. A positive externality of consumption is when the consumption of a good provides social benefits that exceed the private benefits enjoyed by a consumer.
When I was younger my job was to watch my little sister Kyli while my dad showered. My older sister and I always took shifts. We’d go into my dad’s room, lay the baby down and plop onto the edge of the bed. We’d start of any baby watching night the same; lay the baby down and surround her with pillows so that she doesn't roll off. Until one day our “babysitting” turned into baby launching.
