Parents after being away from their children all day, the first words out of their mouth, sadly, may be “So did you finish your homework?” (Kohn). One mother said it permanently damaged her relationship with her son because i forced her to be an enforcer rather than a mother. Literacy expert, Harvey Daniels, says “Most of what homework is doing is driving kids away from learning” (Kohn). There are some types of homework that do help though. One example of homework that helps is Spaced Repetition. One side of the argument is that people believe that homework doesn’t help students. 4 in 10 parents say that most homework is just busy work. If you are wondering, not a single study has ever supported the folk wisdom that homework teachers good work habits or develops positive character traits such as self-discipline, responsibility or independence. Adults don’t see the pain there kids are in because of homework. The homework that the students get is driving them away from wanting to learn. The students are getting frustrated because of all the homework they have every night (Kohn). …show more content…
Spaced repetition is a good example of the kind of evidence-based techniques that researchers have found have a positive impact on learning. Here's how it works: instead of concentrating the study of information in single blocks, as many homework assignments currently do reading about, say, the Civil War one evening and reconstruction the next- learners encounter the same material in riefer sessions spread over a longer period of time. Homework can sometimes be mechanical, excessive, and lack an obvious objective, but one cannot deny some of the benefits that homework has. Another good learning technique is known as “retrieval practice” which is when a student learns something but after they learn it they reinforce it
Sometimes our parents have no time to help us because they have their jobs. Then if we can’t get any help it’s going to be either a late grade or an F because we can’t get a good grade without a complete assignment. Our parents could also have a goodnight sleep without having to worry about us failing their classes because of homework. Teachers will also gain out of no homework because they don’t have to deal with grading messy handwriting and awful grammar. They don’t have to stay up however long it takes just to grade all the papers their students. It’s especially hard for middle school teachers and up because there are so many kids and so many different classes. Teachers can go anywhere they want if their lesson plan is finished for the next day if there is no homework. They won’t have to deal with angry kids, teens and yelling at them if they’re failing school because of homework. Homework is keeping everyone up.
Before everyone rushes off to condemn homework altogether, they should realize the many benefits provided when students take work home. Many times, repetition has been proven as “the law of learning.” When students do work outside of school, it helps reinforce what they learn inside school. According to Wendy J. Ponte, a freelance writer with three school-aged children, there are “no studies to back up the claim” that repetition improves academic performance. While some repetition might be helpful, Ponte points out that “When kids come home with 100 multiplication problems to solve, it becomes simple drudgery.” Can a love of learning be fostered in children who are overcome with hordes of homework?
After a long day of school, students are tired, stressed, and overworked. This is often something that is ignored when it comes to students of all ages. Homework provides a heavy load that can add additional stress and time on a student’s shoulders. Schools should be making sure that students are receiving enough work throughout the day, to make sure kids do not have the worry of homework when school is over. Students who receive lots of homework, may not have enough time in the evenings to be around family, friends and enjoy the rest of their day.
Many college students struggle to find a powerful way to memorize what they have learned in class. Thomas Frank created a youtube video to explain space repetition. Spaced repetition is studying over time but adding large time gaps in between each session . Studying with spaced repetition is a powerful way to study efficiently because of the spacing effect. The space effect is that ideas need to be spaced out in order to allow your brain to learn and memorized efficiently.Different scientist have created experiments to justify why spaced repetition is one of the most powerful methods of memorizing your studies. The scientist found that forgetting is a major part because your brain tries harder to learn the material. Any college student study
Although homework may be beneficial to some students, I think it doesn’t help with our education and needs to stop. To begin, is homework necessary? Australia did a study on homework inflicting kids’ learning. It wasn’t helpful for students in grades below 11th and 12th, yet it was beneficial towards upperclassmen in high school. A british study showed homework being beneficial to all students. Homework every night for 2-3 hours helped in english, math and science. Secondly, other than Britain, there is no evidence to demonstrate that homework is beneficial to students below the high school age. More homework isn’t correlated with children in elementary school. The only thing that shows up less positive attitude
Most students claim that homework is very frustrating. In fact, 99% of students who have homework, think that it is much too stressful. We kids should be able to spend time with their family, instead of doing work already assigned and completed in class. No elementary student should have homework. It is not shown to be a benefit, but rather a stressor and time consumer. Why are you upsetting the next generation?
With homework being a very important aspect of school kids are ultimately robbed of their free time. Time outside of school should be spent on partaking in extracurricular activities, socializing, and refreshing oneself to get prepared for school the next day. Outside of their school day, most children wish to have lives, but most of their lives are being flooded by homework and its pressures. Although, doing homework can prepare students for quizzes. It allows the child to learn the necessities in order to do well on their upcoming test or quizzes without their grade suddenly plummeting from scoring poorly on a test or quiz. A plethora of homework may make a child dislike school because piling on various homework assignments tends to take away
School is something we all have to go through. And all through school, we get homework. Most students think that homework is a horrific thing, but it has been proven to give more benefits than disadvantages. It can teach independence, responsibility, and can improve grades. Also it benefits the teacher, by letting the teacher know how much and how comfortable the students are with the topics. Homework is beneficial to high school and middle school students and teachers in the US.
Students can get stressed out because of the overload of homework and it can be too much to handle. Homework can be a stressor instead of a motivator for students. Most schools teach for about seven hours a day yet when the student goes home, they have more work to deal with. Adolescents will be bored with the homework and all of the knowledge that will
Many experts say, without a doubt , that homework is counterproductive for kids. I firmly agree with these experts about how homework is incompetent . The reasons why I acknowledge this is because children get limited. with family, children don’t get enough sleep and it damages relationships between kids and parents.
Firstly homework is not proven to be beneficial. Homework does not prove to be beneficial as teachers have monitored their students grades and have found that if children from kindergarten to year 7 get more than 30 minutes of homework, their grades can decrease as they spend more time on homework that won't help them. As well as grades homework can cause family tensions as well because parents may force their child to do
Homework is a huge role in your education, many kids think that teachers like to annoy kids by giving them homework. They do not look at the positives, homework can result in you getting a job, money, business, etc. Less than one percent of students say, “homework is stressful,” now those students will struggle to be successful. for example, Steve Jobs was successful but he had to struggle to get to his spot. homework can result in learning to take responsibility for his or her actions, teaches you to
Yet, homework does have an advantage, it can build good study habits and grades. Homework helps boost test scores tremendously. Since it’s a practice assignment, students get a view of what they’ll be learning. “Practice assignments do improve scores on class tests at all grade levels” (Cooper). Students can fully understand their new lesson when provided with homework. Everyone knows that by practicing something, they can get better at it. This is the same idea with homework, students practice, and eventually get pleasing grades. Although all grade levels can benefit from homework, it is really beneficial to high schoolers. “If a country like the U.S were to decrease the amount of homework assigned to high school students, test scores would likely decrease unless additional supports were added” (O, Furniture). Unlike other countries, homework is a major part to lead to success. This proves that students, especially high school ones, need homework to achieve the desirable scores they want. Homework is also a great way to study for a test. “Beyond achievement, proponents of homework…claim it can help students develop good study habits so they are ready to grow as their cognitive capacities mature” (Cooper). Studying is a huge part in getting a pleasing grade in the subject. When a student studies homework, they can comprehend what is being taught more clearly. This will
Another pro of homework is that it has been linked to higher student achievement. “Duke University Professor Harris Cooper and his research team identified 35 studies that found a positive correlation between homework and achievement, but only after elementary school” (Fuglei). Younger students are less capable of fully reaping the benefits of homework because their study habits are not completely developed yet, among other reasons. However, older students have greatly benefited from homework when it comes to their test scores. Dr. Cooper again stated that “Across five studies, the average student who did homework had a higher unit test score than the students not doing homework” (Fuglei). However, those against homework disagree with these claims, and hold the opinion that homework is unrelated to student success. They attribute higher tests scores and other achievement to other factors, not homework. Another pro is that homework allows teachers to gauge how well students are understanding the material, and then modify instruction as needed. Teachers can also identify struggling students through their homework performance and provide more assistance for them. This way, students won’t feel like they are being singled out or feel embarrassed for not fully grasping the material. Homework also serves as a reference for teachers during parent-teacher conferences (“The Good Schools Guide”). Without homework, teachers would have to find other methods to gauge student
Time is limited, and homework consumes the majority of it for students. Students may take hours before they finish their homework; as a result, students lose hours of sleep causing them unable to focus in class the next day. The circle then continues, students stay up late doing homework because of how much there is, or the exercises are hard to comprehend, lose focus in class and the cycle repeats. Some may choose not to forsake their sleep and leave the homework incomplete, but as a consequence, it would result in a low homework grade in a subject that has a homework policy. The cons of homework do not end there. Homework also robs a student’s time with their family and to themselves. Parents may plan a weekend for the family to have fun, but if the assignment is incomplete, then the fun will have to be cut for the student. Students are also limited in how they can pursue their self interest, due to having to place homework as a priority. The concept of homework can
