Explain the characteristics of electrophilic addition of HX to alkenes ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

GIVEN:

The determine the characteristics of electrophilic addition of HX to alkenes

Explanation:

Alkene (R) react with HX to give alkyl halides (RX).

In HX , X is halogen. halide ions(X-) acts a nucleophile and as good leaving group.

It involves two step,

i) breakage of double bond in alkene group results in formation of secondary carbocation which is more stable than primary carbocation.

ii) then H+ attack to less substituted carbon group and X- bonded to the more substituted carbon group.
