will be presented throughout the various chapters in this text. Keep in mind
though, that for greatest success, you must do more than understand the strate
gies. You must also know when, why, and how to use them.
Four Types of Readers
Just as not all types of reading are the same, not all readers are the same. To under-
stand how readers differ, read the following description of the four levels of read-
ing and learning:'
1. Tacit learners/readers. These readers lack awareness of how they think
when reading.
2. Aware learners/readers. These readers realize when meaning has broken
down or confusion has set in but may not have sufficient strategies for fixing
the problem.
3. Strategic learners/readers. These readers use the thinking and comprehen-
sion strategies described in this text to enhance understanding and acquire
knowledge. They are able to monitor and repair meaning when it is
disrupted.
4. Reflective learners/readers. These readers are strategic about their thinking
and apply strategies flexibly, depending on their goals or purposes for read-
ing. In addition, they reflect on their thinking strategies and how they might
be used and revised.
Which type describes your reading now? With this textbook, you are on your
way to becoming a strategic and reflective learner and reader! The dynamic pro-
cess of reading and learning can be broken down into manageable pieces. Master
the parts and see how they contribute to the whole. We begin by breaking down
reading into three stages and explaining the strategies to use for each.
