It is proposed that a 3Km road to be construct as the main access road to the project office premises from the nearby town. Therefore many aspects of the construction should be designed and given in the proposal. As an geotechnical engineer of the project address followings and provide appropriate design solutions as a part of the proposal

  1. A granular soil has an effective angle of shearing resistance of 20° and road embankment is to be made of this material. If the factor of safety is to be 1.5 determine the safe angle of the slope to be maintained as you required to mention in your design proposal.
  2. Conduct a standard laboratory Proctor compaction test in the laboratory. Assume the specific gravity of the soil particles is 2.70. Plot the compaction curve and determine Optimum moisture content and maximum dry density can be achieved
  3. In your design proposal, it is important to mention the quantity of soil material required to construct the embankment. If the top width of the embankment to be maintained 3m and the height of the embankment to be 5m (assuming same level ground throughout the axis of the road) and the angle of slopes to be maintained as you proposed in part (a).Bulk density of the material excavated from the burrowing pit is 18.5 kN/m3 with a moisture content of 10%. If the soil to be compacted to a 95% of the maximum dry density obtained in laboratory as calculated in part (b), find the volume of soil to be excavated from the burrow pit to construct 100m long section of the embankment
