I agree with all the points that the author gave in his writing and think that this book should remain in the commandant’s reading list. 11. INTRODUCTION: I will be writing my book report on the short story A Message to Garcia. Elbert Green Hubbard was an American writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher. Raised …show more content…
He then returned to the US and was given command of a force of "Immunes", African-American troops assumed to be immune to tropical diseases found in Cuba. For all his effort, great dedication and initiative, Captain Rowan received the Distinguished Service Cross. This is a great example of initiative, honor, courage, and commitment to the mission. This is a perfect example on how we must be on a day to day basis. Always putting the mission before self-comfort, to never question or object with whatever order or command you are given. Especially with us being in The United Stated Marine Corps, we should abide by these examples, and help others understand the importance of it as well. Everything that Captain Rowan did reflect our duty, our expectations, and our standards. Our duty as Marines to complete whatever mission is given to us, regardless of the objectives we may encounter throughout the way. To exceed the expectations they have for us, and to prove that no mission is impossible. One very important standard is to never strive for the bare minimum, but to always do everything to the best of our ability. We should always adapt and overcome in any given situation, and take initiative with good judgments. We should always work with what we got and do it with no hesitation, but most importantly, to go above and beyond the call of duty. Staying motivated and dedicated and applying Honor, Courage, and Commitment will take
During boot camp, we were taught about the Battle of Fallujah, but after reading this book, I was able to understand so much better. I was able to picture their tactics, strategies, their emotions, and why the Marines were called the “Greatest Generation.”
My opinion on this book is that it is a great and interesting read that captures the attention of the reader and ties in ideally to our Marine Corps values. It depicts perfectly on what it is to be a warrior whether it is past, present, or future. I think that every Marine should read this book or at least look into the history of the Spartans and their dedication to their way of life and culture of war fighting. I strongly believe the book

Frank Darabont (writer-director-producer) in 1999, returned to the director’s chair for the first time in five years. Darabont, who not only directed Shawshank Redemption, but adapted it from a Stephen King story, followed the exact same path with The Green Mile. The film was released by Warner Bros. Pictures, and Produced by Castle Rock Entertainment, Darkwoods Productions, and Warner Bros. David Valdes is the producer, David Tattersall, B.S.C. is the director of photography, Terence Marsh is the production designer, and Richard Francis-Bruce is the film editor.
Audie Murphy still had a lot of trouble and had to “fight the system” to get overseas and into actual combat. But he was very persistent and his persistence finally paid off, and in early 1943, he was shipped to Casablanca, Morocco in Africa as a replacement in Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment (United States), 3rd Infantry Division. Disappointed, Murphy didn’t see any action in Africa, but he participated in extensive training maneuvers along with the rest of the 3rd Division.
Everyday, people are forced to face with vicious circle of decisions: whether to stick to their morals or obey the authority figure. But it’s a fact that people have a propensity to obey authority, more than to preserve their own morals. A Few Good Men is a film that illustrates the struggle every marine faces-- to follow orders, good or bad. But why would marines follow the orders without hesitation if that order questions the principles they live by? Because the orders in the navy are meant to follow all for the reason of making everyone in Navy into good marines and to be strong enough to defend the nation. It required unquestioning commitment and obedience to orders. The articles, “The Perils of Obedience” by Stanley Milgram and “The
A tenet of that theory is that enlightened egoists will recognize that socially responsible behavior will benefit them.
HORSE SENSE If you work for a man, in Heaven's name work for him. If he pays wages that supply you your bread and butter, work for him, speak well of him, think well of him, and stand by him, and stand by the institution he represents. I think if I worked for a man, I would work for him. I would not work for him a part of his time, but all of his time. I would give an undivided service or none. If put to the pinch, an ounce of loyalty is worth a pound of cleverness. If you must vilify, condemn, and eternally disparage, why, resign your position, and when you are outside, damn to your heart's content. But, I pray you, so long as you are a part of an institution, do not condemn
A U.S Marine Corporal shielded a team of “Devil dogs” from a hand grenade. According to the New York Times U.S. Marine, Carpenter threw his body on a grenade to shield his fellow “Devil dogs” in 2010 in Afghanistan. Hand grenades are one of the most awful weapons of war. (www.thewhitehouse.gov). When you jump on a grenade you are not a regular person anymore you are brave, a hero, and very loyal to your men that you would give your life to save other people from a explosive. According to the New York Times, on Thursday June 19, 2014, Carpenter was recognized for being brave and being selfless. His bravery allowed him to be awarded the Medal Of Honor. The Medal Of Honor is the highest military honor. Awarded for personal acts of valor and going above and beyond the call of duty. The evidence given above proves that Carpenter is humble, brave, very loyal to his men,and a hero.
The Lesson, by Toni Cade Bambara, portrays a group of children living in the slums of New York City around 1972. They seem to be content living in poverty in some very unsanitary conditions. One character, Miss Moore, the children’s self appointed mentor, takes it upon herself to further their education during the summer months. She feels this is her civic duty because she is educated. She used F.A.O. Schwarz, a very expensive toystore, to teach them a lesson and inspire them to strive for success and attempt to better themselves and their situations.
I believe the lesson to be taken from A Message to Garcia is to do your assigned tasks without asking questions. If you are told to do something, you were specifically told because you were picked of all the other people in your vicinity. No matter the task, you are held responsible. Any task you have is Garcia and you must complete that task and carry the message to Garcia. The length of the assignment depends entirely on your individual choice. If you waste time by asking questions, you needlessly prolong the journey and the task inevitably gets difficult because of the procrastination. Garcia doesn’t want to wait for you, he’ll move around, making it harder for you if you waste time. If you get straight to work, the length will be shorter and will be easier. You should be able to
When I first started the book it was slow and I didn't like it very much. When Marcus started talking about the training it really pulled me in. He told me every detail about the training he when through to become a Navy SEAL. He took me through every

Bartolme De Las Casas is an interesting character. His passion for people who at the time were seen as a sub species of humans (if even human at all) is remarkable. De Las Casas came from a modest family and was well educated. He was brought into the world of the America's through his father Pedro De Las Casas who was an encomiendo himself. His travels through the New World prior to 1510 when he became an ordained priest shaped his crusade to defend the Natives.
