Are there heroes in today’s society? No one thinks of themselves as a hero, but it does not take any special skills to be a hero because anyone can be a hero. The characteristics of a hero only show up when there is a time of need such as a major catastrophe or minor incidents that happen on a daily basis. During the twenty-first century there have been quite a few major catastrophes. The major catastrophes include the 9/11 attacks, two major hurricanes (Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy), and the Boston marathon bombing. There are also several different major and minor characteristics that a hero will show in times of need. For instance some major characteristics of a hero are perseverance/determination, bravery/courage, dedication/endurance, and selflessness/sacrifice. Some minor characteristics include humility, fearlessness, skill, strength, integrity, and intrepidity (Wanamaker, 2013). In the twenty-first century the 9/11 attacks is the first major catastrophe. During this major disaster there were quite a few individuals who helped to rescue people. There were heroes in each of the three crash sites that occurred on that very eventful day. On September 11, 2001 four planes were hijacked by terrorists. After the hijacking, two of the airplanes were crashed into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center. The third one made impact with the West side of the Pentagon. The last airplane crashed into a field outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Through the
If there is one day I dread most upon its arrival, it would be 9/11. Sure there was an immense amount of strength as a nation represented, following the terrorists attacks, but it also brought a great amount of grief and sorrow. I remember watching videos of innocent people jumping from windows in the twin towers hoping to escape the terror. These people believed there was no one to help and no one to help them. They lost hope. In “Remembering a Hero, 15 Years After 9/11” written by Peggy Noonan, published in The Wall Street Journal on September 11th 2016, Alison Crowther—Welles Crowther’s mom—recalls the courageous actions to save the lives of others, made by her son on this horrific day. Noonan utilizes pathos, ethos, asyndeton, and
The World Trade Center Towers collapsed, the pentagon had a plane crash through it, and Flight 93 crashed into a field on September 11! Four planes were used in the terrorist attempt to tear the nation apart. Five hijackers apprehended American Airlines Flight 11 and used that commercial airplane to crash into the North Tower in New York’s World Trade Center at 8:46 a.m. At 9:03 a.m., five more hijackers overtook the pilots of United Airlines Flight 175 to fly into the South Tower. American Airlines Flight 77 was also seized by five terrorists and used to crash into the western side of the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. The Capitol or the White House was thought to be the fourth hijacked plane’s target. Because of the heroics of the passengers on United Airlines Flight 93, the plane was forced down in a rural field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania at 10:03 a.m. Flight 93’s voice recorder showed that the passengers and crew tried to regain control from the hijackers. The people aboard that flight were informed of the attacks that took
One of the most known and worst events occurred on September 11, 2001. Terror attacks occurred in the United States of America in the cities of Washington D.C. and New York City. An Al-Qaeda terrorist group organized this attack by sending terrorists on four different airplanes to crash into the World Trade Center in New York City, and the Pentagon in Washington D.C. Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center, while another one was targeted for the Pentagon. Although one plane hit the Pentagon, the other went off course and crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. The plane that crashed into a field in Pennsylvania was supposed to either hit the White House or the Capital building. Over 3,000 people died and this day in

When an Islamic extremist group called Al-Qaeda, hijacked the plane and crashed into on of the World Trade Center Towers. On the 80th story of a 110 story building. It instantly killed all in the plane and many in the tower. 18 short minutes later another 757 United Airline disappeared into the second building. This plane crashed into the south side of the second building on the 60th floor killing all in the plane as well.

On 9/11, terrorists hijacked four planes and were able to crash two of them into the World Trade Center's twin towers in New York and one into the Pentagon.
On September 11, 2001 something unforgettable happened. The Twin Towers in New York City were struck by two commercial aircraft. But there was more to the attacks than people realize. Some of the biggest heroes that day were the men and women who landed the 30,000 planes in the air that day. Those people stopped potential hijacks right in their tracks. These people were real heros
Self sacrifice not only helps those directly affected, but also serves as a powerful symbol that makes a difference in the world. One man who put his life before others selflessly was Rick Rescorla. A retired US Army officer, he worked at the World Trade center as a director of security before and during the attacks of September 11th. He had always suspected that the World Trade center could be a potential target for terrorists. So, on the day of the attack, Rescorla was instrumental in helping those in the building to escape. Ignoring a PA announcement that ordered everyone to stay at their desks, Rescorla ordered everyone to escape through the staircases in a calm manner. His wife, Susan, who was watching the news at home, called him frantically.
September 11, 2001, millions of New Yorkers and American citizens woke up and started their day, unprepared and unaware for the catastrophic attack that would be taking place in just a few short hours. At 8:46 a.m., Eastern Standard Time, Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower. The impact killed all of the passengers and crew as well as hundreds inside the building. At 9:03 a.m., a second plane, Flight 175, crashed into the corner of the South Tower killing passenger, crew, and workers who worked on floors seventy-five to eighty-three. Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. killing approximately 185 individuals (History.com Staff). Because of the damaged to the support system, fires, and impact at extremely fast speed, the South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m. (Lipton and Glanz). Having heard about the acts of terrorism that had just taken place in New York and Washington, D.C., a group of passengers drove their plane, Flight 93, into a Pennsylvania field killing everyone on board but possibly saving hundreds of other lives in the process. The North Tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m. 102 minutes after being struck (History.com Staff). On September 11, 2001, almost twelve hundred people were wounded or killed by “coordinated suicide attempts” by Al Qaeda terrorists. In result to the four airplanes being hijacked and used for premediated reasons, the United States government instituted new regulations for entering the country and airport security as well as expounded on systems already in place.
September 11, 2001, was a very important day to some muslims, but a tragic day for the Yousafzai's. They believed that Osama bin Laden was a hero and celebrated him. While she talked about Osama Bin Laden Malala said “the Quran clearly states that it is wrong to kill” however, many people saw him as a hero because his interpretation of the Quran meant that everyone else was evil unless they were Islamic (55). However, Malala and many other muslims could not believe that a true follower of Islam would do something that horrible. They felt that God would not wish to see anyone get killed and didn’t understand how Osama bin Laden and his followers could interpret the meaning of the Quran and Islam religion so differently than they do. This proves
Heroes are those who have gone above what the average person would do to ensure the welfare of others. Natural disasters, terrorism, poverty, and war are some of the many things that destroy and end people’s lives. Throughout history, many people have made a difference. However, as history progresses, what we consider to be socially normal changes along with our definition of a hero. In Ancient Greece, Theseus, Hercules, and Perseus were considered heroes, but today only Theseus and Perseus would be considered heroes because Hercules would be shunned by society.
