The article I read from The New York Times is about how plastic is threatening to seabirds lives. This has to do with psychology because they study the effects of plastic on the birds, and the brain is effected. Waste and global warming is becoming a major problem on our planet, and many animals are being negatively affected. Studies and experiments like this occur everyday in psychology. Psychology can be defined as the scientific study of behavior and mental processes (textbook p.5). In this case, the behavior of humans leaving harmful plastic around is affecting the behavior of the seabirds. According to Fleur, we know this is an increasing issue because there are several other studies like the “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences”. It also discusses how the plastic production has doubled globally every 11 years since the 1950s, which is crazy to even think about because its currently 300 million tons per year. …show more content…
The scientific method starts with making observations, and then you can create a hypothesis and prediction based on the observation whether it be descriptive, correlational, or experimental (Research mathods,8/25/15) . In this article, it mostly consists of descriptive research which include, case studies, naturalistic observation, and surveys. They allow a researcher to make careful, systematic, real-world observations (Textbook p.42). In this study, it uses surveys to analyze 135 seabirds to find that today about 90 seabirds have traces of plastic in their stomachs. A survey is what allows us to ask/study large numbers or people (in this case seabirds) questions about attitude and behavior (textbook p.44). The sample size for this specific study would be 135 which is the subset of a population being studied. The population in this case would be all seabirds, which is the entire group from which the sample was taken
Throughout this semester of Psychology 150 I have learned a great deal about several different concepts that I consciously, and sometimes unconsciously, find myself applying to my life. There are five different psychology topics I found that held the most relevance to my life. Some of these topics do not deal with myself exclusively, but they do affect the people I hold dear to me. The topics range from disorders to personality differences, and they all affect me in some way, both indirectly and directly.
Lots of research forms an put together biopsychosocial approach which realizes the biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors
The scientific method is used during experiments to find a conclusion and or reason as to why an event or something happens.
In Chapter 7 of our What Is Psychology textbook, we learned about the importance, details and strategies of memory techniques. One type of memory is Short Term, which only last up to thirty seconds before forgetting. Whenever has to remember a number or a name, they often repeat the information multiple times so that the Short Term Memory can transition into Long Term Memory. In order for this transition to occur, the information must be constantly repeated, or important enough to be held in the permanent memory, which helps create a “folder” with all retaining information and reminiscing. Another way short term can become long term is using a method called Chunking, this breaks the bigger pictures into smaller ones for the brain to remember,
Growing up, I never considered myself as truly talented. I would watch my friends as they excelled in sports or received their black belt after playing the hardest song on the recorder. At that age, they probably dreamed of becoming a professional athlete or a musician, but where did I stand in all of this? Everything I did was either subpar or mediocre. There was never a field or an activity that I dominated in (except limboing but that won’t get me anywhere in life). It wasn’t until one day when I saw my friend crying on our first day back from spring break, when I learned that I did have a talent after all. After consoling her, I learned that her grandfather had passed over the break; but I also learned that I have a raw talent for comforting others, talking to them, making them feel just a little bit better about life. As I reflect on this day, I know that my young, psychoanalytic self was born to be a psychologist.
In Psychology 101, you learn about a personal fable; something that I have not lost. I have always wanted to change the world that I was destined for greatness and teaching elementary school students gives me that power. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
The Scientific Method is the standardized procedure that scientists are supposed to follow when conducting experiments, in order to try to construct a reliable, consistent, and non-arbitrary representation of our surroundings. To follow the Scientific Method is to stick very tightly to a order of experimentation. First, the scientist must observe the phenomenon of interest. Next, the scientist must propose a hypothesis, or idea in which the experiments will be based around. Then, through repeated experimentation, the hypothesis can either be proven false or become a theory. If the hypothesis is proven to be false, the scientist must reformulate his or her ideas and come up with another hypothesis, and the experimentation begins again. This
What exactly is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist? Psychologists receive graduate training in psychology and pursue either a Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) or Psy. D. (Doctor of Psychology) in clinical or counseling psychology. Psychiatrists are physicians that have specific training in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses. Sub categories of psychology.
The scientific method starts out as a person asking a question about a certain topic. Then the person researches that topic and learns more about it. Next the person creates a hypothesis which is an explanation of the topic and gives reasons and explains the reasoning behind the certain topic. Then you are to test your hypothesis with an experiment of some sort. The experiment has to be relevant to the hypothesis and the topic. Once you finish the experiment, come up with a conclusion. Did the results fail or succeed? Finally, you need to
One known research method is the Scientific Method which is a uniform way of creating observations, assembly data, establishing concepts, testing predictions, and understanding outcomes. These observations are made in order to observe and define behaviors. The first step to take in using a scientific method is to develop an issue or question. Next step is to perform a research and observation on the issue or question that was developed. Then a hypothesis needs to be formulated after these steps have been made.
Introduction: The Scientific Method is a method utilized by scientists all around the world. There are many reasons for its universality such as its aid in objectively answering questions and coming to valid conclusions, its demanding organization which forces scientists to form hypotheses and carefully follow and document their methodology to the letter, and lastly it aids in the validity and repeatability of the results of experiments. In general the scientific method, aids scientists in answering the uncertainties that plague life objectively and in a way that can be repeated by other scientists globally so as to uphold or disprove results.
When I started this class this pass September I had a little knowledge of psychology. In my junior year of high school I took Psychology as an elective class. I really enjoy it alot, it amaze me how much there was to know about our brains. This September I came with the feeling that this psychology class was going to be way different from my psychology class from high school. And that my knowledge from my class before wasn’t going to be useful at all. But I was wrong, this class has actually been better than my other class. Because it has help dust off some of the concepted that I had learn before. But it has also made gain more knowledge about psychology that I didn’t knew before. For example the next concepts are the ones that had impacted me the most: critical thinking and the eight essential, implicit learning, short term and long term memories. I chose these concept because they have not only taught me more about psychology, but they have made a big impact on me.
* Predict: Offering predictions (or hypotheses) about how a given condition or set of conditions will affect
I work in psych and you cant imagine what goes there. Half the patient their are psych patients and then the other half are transient patients. Its terrible system because the transient patients are only there to get free bed and a meal. What happens is that the patients get money of the beginning of the month. Then once they run out of their money they show up at our facility. It's like a revolving door for these patients. They come in, we send then home, and then they come back.
This research article was taken from the Association for Psychological Science (APS) Journal. This specific issue had a total of ten articles, and while they are covering different topics and studies, some of them do focus on similar ideas. Psychology is all about the study of the mind, and how it has different parts intended for unique functions. It seems like a good portion of the articles for this specific journal deal with emotions and how the body interprets them. One article deals with the stress of different generations, while another deals with an individual’s willpower against sugar. There is an article about self-esteem and how that varies during a lifetime, as well as an article on cooperation. The article that will be specifically discussed in this research paper also has to deal with how the body interprets things when it comes to a stressful situation, such as a crime. It looks at how reliable eyewitness testimony is after traumatic events, specifically in regards to lineups.
