Healthcare workers such as nurses and physicians are often directly exposed to diseases while they are administering a drug to the patient, or drawing blood from them for instance. Diseases such as HIV and hepatitis often spread though mishandling of needles that were previously used by a HIV patient, which may still have a small concentration of blood on it. The causative pathogen for a disease such as SARS or Tuberculosis is also spread when the patient and doctor share the same space for considerable amount of time, causing the healthcare worker to inhale significant amounts of the disease causing pathogen.
