Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The some other ways that people can reduce transportation-related carbon dioxide emissions have to be found.
Concept Introduction:
Energy of Combustion: The energy released in the form of heat when given substance undergoes combustion reaction.
A Fuel is a substance that releases energy when it gets burnt in presence of Oxygen. The phenomenon a substance getting burnt in presence of Oxygen is termed as combustion and it is exothermic process. The larger the amount of heat released per gram of a substance, greater the potential it has to be a fuel.

- Write the Lewis structures and give the electron-region geometry, molecular geometry, and bond angles, and the hybridization of the central atom of these polyatomic ions and molecules. (a) BrF2+ (b) OCCl2 (c) CH3+ (d) SeCS (e) CH3arrow_forward4. Photochemical smog is a type of air pollution in the troposphere of our planet produced when sunlight acts upon motor vehicle exhaust gases to form harmful substances such as ozone (O3). For example, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) reacts with atmospheric oxygen (O2) in the presence of light to produce ozone (O3) and nitrogen monoxide (NO).arrow_forwardWithout naturally occurring greenhouse gases, Earth's average global temperature would be near 0°F (or -18°C) instead of the actual value of 59°F (15°C). How do atmospheric greenhouse gases warm Earth? Do not use the word “trapped” in your answerarrow_forward
- Why do you think engineers believe that spraying, and not a steady stream of fuel, is more efficient?arrow_forward2. Which is more cost-efficient when cooking? Using electric stove or LPG? Support your answer.arrow_forwardWhat is Environmental chemistry? What is Stoichiometry? What are the types of chemical reactions? Include sources and cite references.arrow_forward
- A Honda Accord gets 24 miles per gallon in the city and is estimated to emit 7 tons of CO2 per year. How many trees would it take to absorb the Accord's emissions? Hint: 1 ton equals 2000 pounds and single tree can absorb 30 pounds of CO2 per year.arrow_forwardCalculate the number of pounds of CO, released into the atmosphere when a 25.0 gallon tank of gasoline is burned in an automobile engine. Assume that gasoline is primarily octane, CgH,8, and that the density of gasoline is 0.692 g mL. This assumption ignores additives. Also, assume complete combustion. CO, released: Ib TOOLS x10arrow_forwardA typical long-haul diesel truck travels an average of 72,000 miles annually. Diesel-powered trucks are though to be a major contributor of particulate matter less than 2.5 μm (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from mobile sources. Assume the average long-haul diesel truck emits 8.67 g/mile of NOx. The annual emission rate (kg/yr) for NOx is most nearly: 15.2 O 625 O 64,0 O 1.57arrow_forward
- How do dirty fuels cause air pollution and what pollutants would be of Interest to you?arrow_forwardMuch of the U.S. electricity is generated in thermal generating stations that burn fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas. The use of solar-powered generating stations is expected to increase over the next decade and replace older fossil-fuel generating stations. What impact might this change have on greenhouse gas emissions?arrow_forwardBased on the world consumption of coal by region from 1988-2013 as shown in the figure below, which is the cleanest place to live in terms of air quality? 4000 | Asia Pacific Africa 3500- |Middle East | Europe & Eurasia |5. & Cent.
